You get your other half or the client to place where they would like their picture to hang.
Mark the top with a pencil and one side of the frame.
Look at the back of the picture that needs to be hung. Pick up the picture frame by the string and balance it on your finger (as if your finger was the nail or screw it will be attached to). Mark where your finger lies so the picture is flat and balanced.
Now measure from your mark on the picture frame to the side of the frame you marked on the wall (A) and another to the top of the frame (B).
Go back to your marks on the wall. Find the horizontal hanging point by using measurement (A) across and mark vertically.
Using your mark at the top on the wall, measure downwards using measurement (B) along vertical mark.
X marks the spot where you should hang your nail or screw as this is also the mark where the picture hangs level.
General advice:
For light items (under 500g), a small nail should be ok.
If your wall is plaster boarded... use plaster board screws (yes they are a thing!) Link?... http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-plasterboard-fixings-metal-25mm-100-pack/69132
The bigger the screw you use does not meant the better the hold and grip. The better fitted and fixed in place screw.
